Moving From Habit to Choice

We often explain our reactions with, “That’s just the way I am.”
It may not bring connection. It may not create happiness.
But it’s familiar, and familiarity feels safe.
Somewhere along the way, we stopped questioning if it actually needs to be this way.
Here’s what I’ve come to believe:
The way your life unfolds, your relationships, the people you attract, the opportunities that show up, is far more negotiable than most of us realize.
If you’re reading this, something in you already knows that.
You’re seeking more.
More awareness.
More intention.
More alignment.
Maybe even small shifts that quietly, and powerfully, change everything.
I can relate.
Most of our behaviors and thought patterns were formed early.
They were brilliant, adaptive responses designed to keep us safe, steady, and accepted.
And they worked.
But fast forward to today…
Without intention, we default to those same patterns. They’re ways of thinking and reacting that made sense then, but may no longer serve us now.
They’re predictable.
They’re deeply rooted.
And they feel safe.
But here’s the tension:
What once protected you might now be limiting you.
Take this example: a lack of affection in childhood can create an adult who is highly self-sufficient, independent, and perceptive.
All strengths.
But without awareness, those same traits can show up as controlling, guarded, or disconnected.
Same origin. Different impact.
So, the question becomes: Are you choosing your responses… or repeating them?
I invite you to reassess, without judgment.
Acknowledge that your patterns served a purpose.
Honor that.
And then, get curious:
Does this way of showing up still serve me now?
How does it impact the people around me?
Who am I in moments of tension or stress?
This is where the work of Shirzad Chamine and Positive Intelligence becomes powerful. It gives language to patterns we all experience, and more importantly, it creates a path to shift them.
I use this assessment with all of my clients, and it resonates deeply. It creates a shared language and a sense of normalcy around patterns we all navigate.
That, in itself, is freeing.
Because here’s the truth:
This is all in your control. If you take time to understand yourself, you can choose how you show up.
So I’ll leave you with one question:
Are you truly maximizing your potential… or just operating within what feels familiar?
